SOFTBALL (Commissioner – Allison Cernich)
The softball division’s goal is to develop fundamental and advanced softball skills through positive teaching, emphasis on continuous improvement, and teamwork. Softball is organized similarly to the baseball divisions with some flexibility for those players coming to the game with baseball or softball experience. We are including girls, ages 7-14, in the league this year with placement across the divisions determined by player ability, previous experience, and coach evaluation on our work out day. Because we expect a limited number of teams in this Division, CHLL partners with other leagues around the city to form a schedule.
Our Minor League (Ages 7-11) will teach the basics of the game including throwing, catching, hitting, and learning the basics of situational play. This will be a primarily machine pitch division focused on the development of the player for the higher divisions. Some flexibility will be extended for movement up in the fall season for older girls who feel comfortable moving to a higher level of play.
Our Major Division (Ages 11-14) is girl pitch with an emphasis on skill development for the specific player. Position specific skills will be emphasized, as will specific skills such as sliding, stealing, and hitting technique. Pitching will be a major focus of development for those who want to learn the skill. Games are umpired by certified umpires.
Please note: There is some flexibility with regard to ages as to which divisions girls play in, especially at the lower divisions, depending on skill and ability.
As we grow our league, we have a limited number of games we can play “in house.” CHLL partners with other leagues around the city to form a schedule. We generally schedule games with the following leagues: Cap City Little League in Northwest DC; McLean Little League in McLean, VA; Arlington Fast Pitch in Arlington, VA. We will likely include games this year with a new league centered out of Joint Base Anacostia Boling in Southeast, DC. If carpools or transportation is needed, that can be arranged within the team. We try to schedule an equal number of home and away games across the season.
